Meet our Eight Bells Volunteers

Alex’s Story!

After facing challenges with employment and a dip in her mental health, Alex knew she needed something to shift her routine.

“I’d been struggling to find work since October, and my mental health really dropped. I wanted something that would help me get out of the house and out of my blue room while gaining experience that would help with my career.”

Alex discovered Eight Bells while browsing the Volunteer West Berkshire website. Something about it just clicked.

“I knew I wanted to be in a place where I could help others and also grow myself. Eight Bells seemed like the perfect fit, especially because I’m interested in working in the mental health sector. I also really wanted to make a difference, even if that’s just by taking part in activities or being someone who listens.”

One month in, Alex says volunteering has already made a meaningful difference to her personally.

“I’ve become nicer to myself. I’ve learned that the little things really do matter, whether I’m calling out numbers at Bingo or helping set up for arts and crafts.”

Speaking of crafts, that’s one of her favourite parts of the day.

“I love the arts and crafts sessions. There’s a great energy, everyone’s having fun, being creative together. It’s really touching to see members take pride in their work and support each other.”

For Alex, Eight Bells has become more than just a place to volunteer, it’s a space to be herself and feel fulfilled through helping others.

“I’m enjoying my time here, embracing my true self and feeling part of the community.”

Tamzin’s Story!

“I started volunteering because I wanted to support my local community, and challenge myself. I’ve struggled with social anxiety in the past, and putting myself out there to speak to new people was a big step. But doing it for a good cause made it feel really worth it.”

“I chose Eight Bells because it felt different to other places—it has a real close-knit community. The thing I enjoy most is the people. Everyone is so friendly, and I love getting to know each person bit by bit.”

“Volunteering has made me feel so much more confident, and I’m hoping the experience will help me in the future too.”
